Carol asks…

why do you have to faise your arms when you are choking?

Some one told me to raise my arms up when i choke why is that? Like water goes down the wrong pipe and you start to cough why does my mum say "RAISE YOUR ARMS RAISE YOUR ARMS!" i dont get why i have to do that please answer thanks!!

WriterMan answers:

For less serious cases of choking, raising your arms helps relax and open your airway so whatever is stuck can dislodge itself.

For serious cases, this isn't anough and the Heimlich maneuver should be done. Be aware, though, that it will hurt to have someone squeeze your chest hard enough to expel a stuck object. That should only be done when the person's life is endangered.

That's why you're asked to raise your arms. The person helping you can then see how serious a case of choking it really is.

When running, should your arms stay straight at a 90o angle and not cross your chest?

When running, should your hands be free and loose or tight? Is having your arms not cross your chest make you go faster or what exactly happens?

WriterMan answers:

Your arms should be at like a 70 degree angle when you run. When you sprint, they should be at a 90 degree angle. Really it doesn't matter if your arms cross your chest or not when you're doing long distance running, though in races and sprinting it is probably better to have them not cross your chest so they can propel you more. Just do whatever feels comfortable with your hands. Some people like their hands to be very loose, while others ball them into fists. Just make sure you're not creating tension in your hands, because that usually leads to tension in other parts of your body.
There is no one way to run. People tend to copy the styles of fast runners, but that can ignore what could be a more effective technique for each individual. Your body can decide what feels best.

When did we start waving our arms in the air at concerts?

I have just bought the Simon & Garfunkel in Central Park DVD and the audience didnt wave their arms around. I remember waving at a Bruce Springsteen concert in the 80's, so when did all that begin? Nowadays, the hands have cameras, flashing!

WriterMan answers:

I think its just cause its the only way to dance when being so crowded in.

What would cause my pulse to disappear when raising my arms above my head?

I've had an issue with weak/numb/tingling arms when I wake up in the middle of the night. A few months ago a doctor told me that my pulse disappeared when I raised my arms over my head, but he didn't resolve any questions about it. What would cause such a thing?

WriterMan answers:

it's a classic sign of thoracic outlet syndrome, which fits with your arm symptoms, too. Go back to the Doctor, you have to find out what is causing the pressure in the thoracic outlet that makes your arms go weak and numb. There ARE stretching exercises for T.O.S. which you can
learn from a physical therapist.

If you are having numbness then I wouldn't let it go too long.
