However, when you are doing this frequently and quite frequently, then that can be a cause for alarm.  Snoring in itself is not a disease but this tells you or other people that you can be suffering from health problems.

Snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea and other breathing problems.  A person with sleep apnea suffers some degree of difficulty in breathing while asleep.  When breathing is irregular, it is only natural that your sleep is inadequate. As a consequence, you are more prone to drowsiness particularly during early afternoon. The general result will be increased susceptibility to stress.  Aside from health issues that snoring can cause, it can certainly result to a dent in relationships of spouses and partners. You cannot blame your spouse or your partner if he or she intends to sleep in a different bedroom or in the living room couch instead of being on your side because you snore like engine.

Some people end up undergoing surgery to prevent from snoring ever again.  In this operation, the surgeon will usually try to examine the air passages and lessen surgically any obstruction.  However, there are instances that the obstructions are many in the air tracts, which is why snoring, may not be totally eliminated although it can be drastically minimized. Normally there are spots that may be the best target for surgery such as the palate, the uvula, and the nasal passages and the tongue. For those who think that snoring doesn't require any drastic measure like surgery then other means may be employed.

Non-surgical processes can be used to solve snoring problems.  Some of these methods are the following: lifestyle change, the use of dental and medical devices, using the continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP device and taking medicines.  If you have some unhealthy habits then lifestyle change becomes a necessity. You have to stop smoking and lose weight if you are obese. The use of devices such as CPAP are only good for temporary or for urgent cases, usually when you have to make sure that people around you get a good night’s sleep.

The first cause for snoring is something that goes with age. If the person gets older the throat becomes narrower and the lesser the muscle tones are in one's throat. Breathing is constricted because of this condition which might lead to open mouths while asleep and eventually for the person to snore throughout the night.

The second cause has to do with a person’s physical attributes such as having a cleft palate or being born with a narrow throat. Meanwhile, compared to women, men are more prone to snoring since they have narrower air passageways.

The third cause has to do with inborn or acquired nasal problems. Having sinusitis or a runny nose means that one has blocked air passages, which could make inhalation difficult. This, in turn, creates a void in the throat that could lead to snoring.

The fourth cause is something that deals with your weight.. A person is more prone to snoring if he is on the heavy side due to the increased fatty tissues and lesser muscle tone in the throat.

The fifth cause has to do with one’s alcohol intake, smoking habit, and specific drugs being taken. This is due to the fact that the substances that are from these activities would tend to relax the muscles in the throat which could be behind the snoring problem. Finally, the sixth cause which has something to do with one's position in sleeping since sleeping on one's back has been proven to contribute more to snoring. This is due to the fact that sleeping on one's back relaxes the tissues in one's throat and it blocks the air passages.
