Prostate Cancer Is Not A Lethal Disease
Cancer is a very frightening word as it is very commonly associated to death. Cancer corresponds to the development of malignant or cancerous tumor in the cells. In the case of the prostate, it develops specifically in prostate glands and unfortunately is a very common form of cancer affecting the American male population.
In its normal development, a cancer results when the genes of a person’s cells become damaged and when these injured cells break from an outgrowth and spread. They start generally to affect other organs. The problem of the prostate cancer is that it doesn't act that way. In most cases, the cancer develop within the prostate and stay there, thus leaving the patient unaware that he has prostate cancer.
Also, prostate cancer progression is slow. This is not something the occurs overnight the reason for this form of cancer is that many changes take place in the structure as well as behavior of cells. Unfortunately, African Americans are more likely to develop this disease as compared to other racial group. On the other hand, it's also known that the risk of contracting this disease is higher in men in whose family there are members suffering from prostate cancer. Finally, the age doesn't mean anything. It is also known about men who have developped this cancer before the age of fifty.
No two cases are the same, and as such, there is no general rule as a treatment. Normally, using antibiotics and non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents are of help. There also cases where muscle relaxants can prove to be useful as too can certain medications taken to treat chronic pain.
As in any cancer, the early detection and start of treatment is key. Even if there is no cure for the condition, you can gain years of life and also find relief from much of the agony caused by this disease. The treatment does not involve any painful procedures; however, you may end up experiencing diarrhea as well as dry skin and some problems with urination as a consequence of being treated for prostate cancer.
For this reaseon, early detection can help in programming a good prostate cancer surgery. It proves to be the best treatment option today.
Fortunately, however, prostate cancer is not always aggressive and it very rarely affects people under the age of fifty. Prostate cancer is also different than other forms of cancer in that it grows very slowly and though it may lead to deaths; it is mostly not a deadly disease.

A highly sensitive new technology capable of detecting a single, cancer-linked molecule in blood, to predict the recurrence of prostate cancer, has been developed by Quanterix. The detection technology counts the number of prostate specific antigen (PSA) molecules released by the cells of the prostate gland into the blood. PSA molecules are trapped on beads and isolated individually on arrays of tiny wells. A fluorescent enzyme added to the array lights up when it binds to PSA, revealing the number of PSA molecules in the sample. (Quanterix) (Source:

The Significance of Prostate Cancer Statistics

From your National Cancer Institute;
Men with prostate cancer have many treatment options. The treatment that's best for one man may not be best for another. The options include active surveillance (also called watchful waiting), surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. You may have a combination of treatments.
The treatment that's right for you depends mainly on your age, the grade of the tumor (the Gleason score), the number of biopsy tissue samples that contain cancer cells, the stage of the cancer, your symptoms, and your general health. Your doctor can describe your treatment choices, the expected results of each, and the possible side effects. You and your doctor can work together to develop a treatment plan that meets your medical and personal needs.
You may want to talk to your doctor about taking part in a clinical trial, a research study of new treatment methods. See the section on Taking Part in Cancer Research.
Your doctor may refer you to a specialist, or you may ask for a referral. You may want to see a urologist, a surgeon who specializes in treating problems in the urinary or male sex organs. Other specialists who treat prostate cancer include urologic oncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. Your health care team may also include an oncology nurse and a registered dietitian.
Before treatment starts, ask your health care team about possible side effects and how treatment may change your normal activities. For example, you may want to discuss with your doctor the possible effects on sexual activity. The NCI booklet Treatment Choices for Men with Early-Stage Prostate Cancer can tell you more about treatments and their side effects.
At any stage of the disease, supportive care is available to relieve the side effects of treatment, to control pain and other symptoms, and to help you cope with the feelings that a diagnosis of cancer can bring. You can get information about coping on the NCI Web site at and from NCI's Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER or LiveHelp

When hospitals acquire surgical robotic technology, men in that region are more likely to have prostate cancer surgery, a new study shows.
1. There is 1 in 1,000,000 chance of X occurring. If Y happens over the period of 20 years, the chance of X occurring increases to 1.4 in 1,000,000.
This provides more information. Thus someone who really wanted understand what the statistic is communicating and understand the boundaries of the statistics would prefer this one.
2. If Y occurs, then the chance of X occurring increases by 40%.
This is short, succinct, good for activist journalists, but really is inferior to the first presentation. LG
