Origins of HIV/AIDS
The discuss about HIV/AIDS origin has resurfaced recently due to new information that has come to light debunking old theories about when HIV originated in human populations. This new information came to us by way of DNA analysis of the current HIV virus. Scientists now guess that HIV jump to human populations from monkeys in the early 1900's. This has done a good ob in putting to rest the old conspiracy theories about HIV being transmitted to humans by polio vaccines. HIV is thought to have jumped to the human population when indigenous African populations who consumed game meats regularly contracted it while butchering animals. A number of viruses humans have today have gotten into our population in similar ways including bird flu.
HIV 1 is the more virulent and common of the HIV strains. HIV 1 is the strain that infects most the world and qualifies HIV as a pandemic. HIV II is the less common strain of HIV that is less virulent. HIV 2 is mostly confined to West Africa, and not as prevalent. Both HIV 1 and HIV 2 are transmitted by bodily fluids. This means that the prevention of HIV rests on safe, and non risky practices. Including using condoms as well as other safe sex practices. AIDS occurs when AIDS HIV has progressed to the point as to promote opportunistic infections and other AIDS defining illnesses.
As treatments become more available the battle against HIV becomes more viable. Prevention needs to be a central pillar in combating AIDS/HIV, as well as aggressive treatment. HAART regimens (combinations of AIDS drugs) are the primary weapon we have and it has been very effective in slowing the progression of HIV. Breakthroughs like these have helped patients live a much longer and healthier life. A essential component in winning the fight against HIV is education, we need more HIV education. Misinformation and lack of understanding has been a huge contributer to the spread of HIV.

Hate to generalize, but most black men don't like condoms. Look at the stats and you'll see that the highest rate of hiv infections is black women.

A team of scientists, led by a virologist from the University of California, San Diego's Center for AID Research (CFAR), has discovered the origin of strains of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among men who have sex with men. The study, which may be important in developing prevention strategies for HIV, will appear in Science Translational Medicine on February 10, 2010.

Me and my wife played this game too, when we were dating. We both really got a lot out of it. Here is what we did, One would answer a question and also ask one question each day. That gave us each time to think of our answer.
We had questions like "What is your favorite memory of your dad?", "Who do you miss from your childhood?", "What do you think happens after we die?", and "Where would you rather be, the beach or the forest?"
Paul Farmer, physician, anthropologist, and author of AIDS and Accusation: Haiti and the Geography of Blame, describes beliefs held by many Haitians that, while official accounts in the United States blame Haitians for the advent of AIDS in the West, the disease was actually sent to Haiti by Americans. A common theme is that the U.S. wanted to get rid of Haitians because too many had immigrated to the States to work and jobs were running low. Assessing these (and other) conspiracy theories with a "hermeneutic of generosity," Farmer finds that they are based on a great deal more truth than many official accounts from the early days of the epidemic. Epidemiological studies reveal that the virus did indeed enter Haiti via Americans - gay tourists who had sex with young male sex workers, forced to perform this work due to abject poverty. The high rates of poverty, malnutrition, and poor medical infrastructure allowed the HIV virus to spread easily within the Haitian population. By engaging in a macro-level analysis and examining the history and political economy of Haiti, Farmer describes the important role the slave trade, Western (neo)colonial powers, and the United States in particular, played in the current poverty of Haitians. In the words of Farmer, "AIDS, although a new disease, is deeply embedded in social and economic structures long in place... violence, poverty, and inequality are the fault lines along which HIV spreads."
Most people who have HIV do not have any symptoms for 5-7 years after they get infected. Some people have flu symptoms within a couple months after infection, but there is no way to tell the difference between flu symptoms caused by actual flu and flu symptoms caused by HIV infection. You cannot tell if someone has HIV just by looking at them.
The only way to find out if you have HIV is to get an HIV test. Even though it may take years for symptoms to show up, testing will detect antibodies to the virus within 3 to 6 months after someone gets infected. In fact, more than 98% of people who have HIV would test positive within 3 months. In very rare cases, it could take up to 6 months for someone to test positive. Testing is recommended 3 months after possible exposure, with retesting 6 months after possible exposure.
IMPORTANT: Even though it may take years for symptoms to show up, and months for someone to test positive, once someone has HIV, they can pass it on to others within a day or 2 after they get infected themselves.
You can check the website hivtest.org to find free testing sites in your area. Just enter your ZIP code. Testing is confidential.

It is very interesting to learn that there is something new that I could potentially work on in the future as a scientist. Then again with the excitement is the inevitable fact that the public would worry about a new epidemic that could happen. Following the outbreak of SARS, bird flu and AH1N1 virus, this superbug is another challenge especially in the field of science. At the same time, it gives people the opportunity to reassess their lifestyle and improve on things that could help reduce risks that pose as a global threat.

Casual contact and masturbation CANNOT transmit HIV.
Shaking hands, hugging and even kisses are fine. You cannot get HIV this way. If you touch yourself, you cannot give yourself HIV. Even if you are masturbating another partner, you won't get HIV.
AIDS patients need extra nutrition and money in order to deal with their disease. As a volunteer for Heifer International, I'm familiar with their reasons for making assistance to mothers with HIV/AIDS one of their special intitiatives. Heifer provides goats to mothers with HIV/AIDS to provide them with milk for extra protein to strengthen their immune systems and to sell for extra cash to pay for medication and transportation to AIDS clinics. This helps them extend their lives and take care of their children: hopefully leaving fewer orphans. If you want more on Heifer's perspective go to
