Managing Stress With Family
The family unit is very different now than it was many years ago, and this makes managing stress at home all the more important and challenging. There may be several members of the family living under one roof, often both parents have to work, and the range of extra-curricular activities that children can have can be quite substantial. All of this means a higher chance of stress and anxiety as a family tries to deal with each other and everything else occurring in their lives.
The best way of managing and dealing with stress within the family unit is by spending time together as a family. This doesn't have to be as large and complicated as a family vacation. Even setting aside one night a week for a shared dinner is enough to bring each individual together in the group and ideally reduce the amount of family stress that may be present. It is when there is little positive interaction between family members that differences of opinion and other issues can create problems.
Having time set aside for fun interaction is a good way for families to manage stress, but not all families can make their schedules so flexible to accommodate a lot of relaxation time together. Other stress reliever to use in the home is to share typical chores together. When it can be seen that everyone is working together to get something done, there is likely to be more harmony under the roof. Dinner is an easy example, with one person responsible for cooking the main meal, another making a salad, a third setting the table, and the last two filling the dishwasher and washing pots and pans by hand.
Families that can work together in the home and can also enjoy each others' company even when there is the potential for conflict will be able to use these techniques to relieve stress that may occur. The importance of open communication and actively listening to the concerns of others cannot be over emphasized. If one member of the family is having difficulty expressing their feelings, then it is even more important for the other members to help this person by listening and being open to a discussion about their concerns. Unexpressed hurts and negative feelings can cause a great deal of damage to relationships, and while one person may not feel comfortable sharing their feelings with the others, it is needed for managing stress within a large family.
The family unit is very important for the well-being of all of its members. Managing stress is necessary in order to prevent resentment and problems in relationships. Family members need to remember that they aren't the only person who may feel stressed out. Stress and tension at home have been shown to cause low self-esteem, lack of interest in school, work, or even in previously enjoyed extra-curricular activities. I have suffered with panic attacks and anxiety since I was 42 years old. I received my bachelors degree in my mid-twenties, attempted my masters in my 30's and now I am 45 and back to classes through online studies. It is never too late to go back to school. The best stress management is to try different things and see what works best for you. Some people like Yoga, some like running, some like working out, and others like listening to music. The best thing to do is figure out what makes you tick. Don't give up, I'm 45 and I plan to perseverere until I receive my doctorate degree. Keep smiling and try to make life worth living for yourself. Try writing in a journal as a stress management component. It helps because you can look back over it after some time and maybe see what helps, what things increase your stress and what are the worries that keep creeping up. Your autonomic nervous system divides into your para-sympathtic and sympathetic nervous system. The first deals with energy conservation, it slows your heart rate and blood pressure, it aids digestion by producing certain hormones etc. Your sympathetic nervous system, on the other hand, deals with your fight and flight responses. This quickens your heart rate and BP, it pumps adrenalin and other hormones through your body to ready it for fighting or fleeing from percieved danger. The consequence of these hormones pumping through your body can cause muscle soreness and stiffness. Under stress with our sympathetic nervous system at full speed we tense our muscles up ready to fight or flee (just like the moment before the gun fires sounding the start of a race). Often we are unaware that we are doing this. Try mediation to relax, deep breathing or other relaxation exercises through out the day. I agree with you. For me, acting passively means I put other people's needs before my own. This is not being true to ourselves. I ended up not having a clue what I wanted and what was important to me because I never thought about it. I was too busy trying to please others. This is a great question.

I agree with everything that the other RN said about eating right and excercising and setting aside time for yourself. These are all things you should really make an effort to do. The only thing I would add is to try not to let yourself get overwhelmed. Take it one day at a time. One minute at a time really. Study a little each day (except your fun day of course) then you won't feel like you have so much to study right before a test. Flash cards worked really well for me, but you have to find what works for you. Nursing school is definitely challenging, but the rewards are tremendous. You are embarking on a career where you will have the ability to make a real difference in people's lives. You are going to be the gatekeeper. You will be an advocator for your patients' safety and health. And when you get through this program (and I promise you that you'll survive) be proud of yourself because you accomplished something that many people could not. Best of luck and welcome to the club!
