Lung Infections and Gum Disease – Are They Connected…
It has recently become quite clear that there is a possible link between lung infections and gum disease. Because both of these problems are serious in and of themselves, neither should be taken lightly. With studies showing that periodontal disease can ultimately cause lung infections, that is yet more incentive to practice effective oral hygiene. Not only are your teeth and gums too important to risk, but your respiratory health is as well.

Lung infections are also commonly known as bacterial respiratory infections. At least, that is one type of lung infection. Specifically, it is the one with which we are most concerned for the purposes of this article. These infections can occur when you inhale fine amounts of bacteria into your lungs. Naturally, within the droplets, there are bacteria. Those germs will first begin breeding and then multiplying - right inside your lungs. The study revealed a link between gum disease and heart disease for dogs. This was especially true when it came to heart valve inflammation also called endocarditis. Endocarditis was found in only .01 percent of dogs who did not have gum disease and in .15 percent of dogs that had stage 3 periodontal disease. The importance of the adaptive immune response for secondary influenza infections and protection from a lethal challenge after vaccination has been well documented. However, some controversy still exists concerning the specific involvement of B and T cells during a primary infection. Here, we have followed the survival, weight loss, viral load and lung pathology in Rag2-/- knock-out mice after infection with influenza A virus (H1N1). Infected wild type mice initially lost weight early after infection but then cleared the virus and recovered. Rag2-/- mice, however, showed similar weight loss kinetics in the early stages after infection but weight loss continued post infection and culminated in death. In contrast to wild type mice, Rag2-/- mice were not able to clear the virus, despite an increased inflammatory response. Furthermore, they did not recruit virus-specific lymphocytes into the lung in the later stages after infection and exhibited sustained pulmonary lesions.
