Lung Cancer Survival Rate Tips
Understanding all the figures about the Lung Cancer Survival Rate is not simple. You have to understand how these figures are put together and what exactly they represent. There are factors that influence how these rates are determined and what you see in the rates may not be exactly what think.
The Basics
Lung Cancer Survival Rate reports refer to a categorized people who suffer from an exact type of lung cancer at some stage. Survival statistics can also signify the rates for people who are suffering from lung cancer at any stage of the disease. The statistics usually relate to the rate of survival after 5 years, regardless of whether the person has cancer or in remission.
It’s very essential that you know the statistics are based on a big group and are averages. Since every case may vary, they are able to predict what the survival rate may be for any particular individual.
Survival Rate Factors
As mentioned, there are many things that influence Lung Cancer Survival Rate statistics. Some of the factors that can alter survival rates area:
• Cancer stages
• The type
• Symptoms
• Conditions of general health
• Diagnosis date
When a doctor gives patient information on the possible outcome of their diagnosis, it is based upon a general idea of what happens in the average case. It is really an estimate and not an exact science.
The Average Survival Rate
The average Lung Cancer Survival Rate for those diagnosed with early stage lung cancer is 49%. This means that 49 out of 100 people live for at least 5 years after diagnosis. On the other hand, people diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread have only a 3% survival rate or only 3 out of 100 people live at least 5 years after diagnosis.
The use of Survival Rates
Now that you understand what Lung Cancer Survival Rate statistics means you can begin to understand how they may be used. The most common use is to help patients understand what lies ahead for them in dealing with the disease and the possibility of their death.
Another, more positive, use is in figuring out how aggressive to be with treatment. Lung cancer statistics will help the doctor to decide the treatments that are working or not. They can help the doctor to make a plan of treatment that will increase the survival rates of patients. Generally, the statistics are extremely useful.

There's a good description of colon cancer on webmd.com. There are 5 stages of colon cancer:
Stage 0: a precancerous polyp that can be removed during a routine colonoscopy (almost 100% cure rate)
Stage 1: a polyp that has become cancerous, but still removable during the colonoscopy, with no further treatment usually necessary (over a 90% cure rate).
Stage 2: the tumor has invaded the lining of the intestine, but has not gone any further. Surgery is necessary to remove the tumor, but there is debate on whether any further treatment is necessary (over 80% cure rate).
Stage 3: The tumor has eaten through the intestine and has invaded at least one lymph node. At this point, chemotherapy is necessary to treat the tumor (60% cure rate, but 75-78% with chemo).
Stage 4: the cancer has spread beyond the intestine to other organs (metastisized). This is the final stage of cancer, though even here the mortality rate is better than many other forms of cancer (I don't know the exact survival rate).
A lot of the time there are no symptoms of colon cancer in the early stages, though cramping, changes in bowel habits, among other symptoms can be indicators of that or other intestinal problems. Only a colonoscopy can tell for sure.
There are no real precautions against colon cancer, though some believe that a high-fiber, low fat diet will help prevent it. It can run in families, but not necessarily. Usually there is no known cause.
The main chemotherapy treatment for colon cancer is nicknamed "FOLFOX." It consists of 5FU, a drug that was developed in the 1950's, leucovorin, a vitamin supplement that helps 5FU work better, and Oxyaliplatin. These are given through an IV over a period of several hours. In stage 4, a 4th drug, Cetuximab, is used to try to slow the metastisizing. There is currently a study to see if that drug can be used in lower stages to block metastisizm in the first place. A good place to look for information is cancer.gov, the official web site for the National Cancer Institute.

Using heart problems as an example, survival rates in the USA are about 20% better than in Canada. Given the job our government here in the states does running the existing programs, it would be a dangerous thing to let them mismanage health care as well.
Very good Dr Chodak
Its so difficult. My Mum died of cancer and to be truthful when she told she wouldn't live long she lost her strength to fight. She planned every detail of her funeral down to hymns, the vicar the place we scattered her ashes BEFORE she was told.
Doctors don't like to give patients life expectancies especially if its less than years. It is well documented that some people die much quicker when told you have a few weeks than those who aren't. It ultimately depends on the individual and their is no right or wrong.
Losing your Mum is one of life's most painful experiences. In my grief I was angry - very angry about so many things. Don't fall out with your Sister you need each other to come through this and it won't change what has already happened.
Sending you hugs - be strong.
