Stopping panic Attacks: Four Great Ways
How to stop bad panic attacks is very important to anyone who has suffered from them. There are four main ways to stop panic attacks.
Stop Panic Attacks Treatment 1 – Counseling
When you are looking for ways on how to stop panic attacks, the first thing you should look into is speaking with a therapist. By asking you questions a therapist will hope to find an underlining cause for your condition. What kind of questions?
First, your therapist will ask about your childhood to learn about what could have caused the fear or phobia. For instance, you have a fear of enclosed spaces. Your therapist asks you about specifics in your life, good and bad. This kind of questioning can lead to uncovering such phobias. In this example a memory like that could cause you panic attacks in elevators.
Next you may find that stressful situations like work and a death in the family causes you panic attacks.
Finally the root cause of your panic attacks must be identified and accepted before you can deal with them.
Stop Panic Attacks Treatment 2 – Finding Ways To Cope
After talking with your therapist, they’ll suggest ways to cope with the attacks either before they begin or as they go on. One of the many methods a therapist might suggest is deep breathing. By breathing deeply a person finds themselves relaxing but it also makes sure that a body and mind get all the oxygen it needs to fight panic attacks. By getting the oxygen you need you will have a steady heart beat and feel more calm, thus making panic attacks less likely.
Stop Panic Attacks Treatment 3 – Grounding The Attack
Along with the other two ways to stop an attack, consider grounding it. How does one ‘ground’? You can drink cold water or get a hold of an ice cube.
Stop Panic Attacks Treatment 4 – Focus On Objects
Try to name everything around you whole staying calm is a good way of dealing with an ongoing panic attack. By changing your focus you can stop a panic attack.

There are those who subscribe to the homeopathic remedies. Depending on the severity, there are certain triggers that will bring on a panic attack. A friend who had mild ones used to rub the palm of his hand with the thumb from the other hand. Another takes medication. A third noticed that if he didn't get a full night of sleep and exercise frequently, they would come on more frequently.
In all honesty, it's probably a slight chemical imbalance that's neurologically based. If you've been suffering for 20 years, I'd go to a Psychiatrist and discuss it with him/her. They can perscribe meds to reduce the onset of panic attacks, as a primary care physician might not be able to accurately diagnose this.
Good luck.
Yeah, to have panic attacks is really horrible. Trying the "One Move Technique" in the Panic Away book might help. It will give you the ability to immediately get rid of your attacks.

It can be treated but not successfully cured permanently. A lot of people may have to stay on meds the rest of their lives. Others might take them for a year or so and then be able to manage the problem enough to go without them. If it is only caused by a pattern of thinking it can be successfully treated with therapy.

Unfortunately, there are no definitive tests for GAD or Bipolar Disorder. No blood tests, or brain scans, etc. Although I understand they are working towards being able to use brain scans in the future to diagnose some psychiatric disorders.
A psychiatrist will question you about family history, symptoms, personal history, any head traumas, history of abuse, etc. Based on your health history, family history, and the answers you give him or her about your experiences and symptoms he or she will come up with a diagnosis.
Since the questions are quite specific and thorough, they usually will get the diagnosis right. However, it is also common to misdiagnose Bipolar disorder (particularly Bipolar II) as depression at first, as most people report the depression symptoms but don't realize that the hypomanic symptoms are symptoms at all.
Often in this case, they will treat you for depression and only after realizing that the anti-depressants are triggering mania do they begin to screen for Bipolar.

Meditation and exercise. You can combine the two with yoga.
It can really help to go on medication for a while to get used to being relaxed, and to learn how to relax your body really well. Then you can taper off the medication and rely solely on the relaxation techniques you have learned. Think about going on something like Xanax or Atavan (you may have to try a few before you find one that works for you) temporarily -- it can really help. Generally combination therapy (medication plus counseling) is far more effective than one or the other alone.
Hi.. i'm sorry for your problems.
It might be a good idea to talk with a therapist about your issues. They can help you learn some coping skills and take baby-steps to regain your sense of trust in the world and others. Therapy works when we work it.
