Recognizing the factors that cause you stress is the first steps to dealing with it. What situations and people are causing you stress? After answering these questions you have to begin to avoid them. When you can you must then do so as often as possible.
Step 2 – Breaking Away and Getting Handle on Yourself
The second step on how to deal with anxiety without medication that you should follow includes taking a break from the stressor and getting a handle on the situation and yourself. You can then come back to the issue with a better perspective.
Step 3 – Change How You React
A third step on how to deal with stress encourages you to change how you would react to the stressor. Making sure you focus on what is most important first is vital. Consider sharing your anxiety with someone you trust or joining a support group who understands about your particular anxiety.
Step 4 – Letting the Stress Go
Finding a way to let go of the stress before it builds is the next step to dealing with it without drugs. This is not accomplished overnight and will take practice but it can be done.

Besides the great four steps above there are a variety of other ways to deal with stress without medication. What are they? Here are some examples:

I'm so tired literally of the side effects of my medication for general anxiety disorder. I have panic & anxiety or I'm drowsy as hell.
I truly feel for you I have had horrible panic attacks for years, yes like you I get that horrible "unreal" feeling , there is no worse feeling like it! I see a psychiatrist once a month , he has me on medication, it helps to a point, like you, I have learned to control the attacks a little better through the years,still all the stuff you have going on in your life, you bought a new house which is great but maybe in the back of your mind the fear of expenses, new neighborhood, not familiar territory yet can make you feel over whelmed without realizing it. Then you lost your best friend, I am really sorry! That alone will give you that "unreal" feeling! Then your Mom is getting married in a week, even though it is a happy occasion there is still a lot of stress, you deep down inside are probably saying to yourself "I hope she will be happy" even if he is a nice guy it is your Mom and you care about her,
Then you have to worry about getting the right dress for her wedding, stress, stress stress. I can't sleep at nights either,for years I felt alone like you, if you don't know someone who is suffering with the same thing the world can be a lonely place.
To answer your questions years ago when I first got the HORRIBLE unreal anxiety attack feeling it would just come on and hit me, especially when I 'd go out to a store, for a walk, or to work , then it turned into agoraphobia from it, fear of open or public places cause it happened so much I was afraid to go out, the fear of having an anxiety attack of that horrible unreal feeling would paralize me. Now years later for me to feel that it is almost always brouht on by stress, once in awhile it hits me from out of the blue but mostly now it's stress.

Kudos to you. You are definitely on the right track. Add cardio (running or walking) to your exercise. Load up on veggies. Its up to you, but you've come this far. Why stop reducing your meds now?
take a really slow, deep breath, and close your eyes. think. then look at the situation rationally. remember emotions can't actually DO anything, they just make you feel bad. if you can deal with that, you're totally fine. it's a matter of control. exercise helps too.

Buspirone (Buspar) is a medication prescribed in generalized anxiety disorder and in resistant depression.
The best thing I've ever used is good old vitamin B-Complex with calcium and folic acid.
That and a good multivitamin really helped me. I swear by the B's.
Stress directly affects the rest of your body, but at times you may not be aware of it. If your stomach is getting upset, i would say it is 100% because of your stress. Stress, anxiety, panic and any other negative emotions get pushed directly into your stomach, all of your organs take on the same stress that you are dealing with, hence they start to act out. Maybe you have a bacterial infection in your intestinal tract, when your internal organs are weak, they tend to have to compensate, and usually you notice stress more, especially in the region of your stomach.

If you are worried about the effects of a new medication, be sure that you try it when you aren't going anywhere. The biggest side effect you have to worry about is usually drowsiness.

I took klonopin(clonazapam) for 12 yrs. It was the last 5 or 6 yrs I only took 1mg at night. Then I got a new doc, who said no more. I was never addicited to it, but my body was dependent, I learned. This time last year, I was entering hell.

Now, about your medication falling into the water.. my sleep med, Ambien, did, 2 weeks ago. I took the wet pills in to the phamacy, to proove what happened.. they called for me, I got more.
Those pills will be no good.. or at best, very mild.. when they get wet, they release the drug. That's what I was told.

Great perspective. I was resistant to meds but they really help me. You might be interested in Episode 2 of This Emotional Life where they describe how SSRIs appear to prevent hippocampal shrinkage caused by depression and even reverse the effects that depression has on the physical structure of the brain.

I believe it is possible to overcome through thinking.
Think to yourself, "It's going to be okay. No matter what, it's going to end soon enough."
It always works for me, but I think about something really fun/good coming up in the immediate future, and always get this happy feeling that makes me a little louder (I have social anxiety).
So, please don't do drugs or alcohol. They're bad for you and I have witnessed first hand the severe consequences that can result from overuse.
