Don't always feel obligated to say something, even if you think that it might be funny to lighten the mood. If you don't know what to say in an uncomfortable situation, just don't say anything. It sounds like that's probably not part of your personality, but if you're afraid of saying something stupid that might just be the easiest way to solve the problem.
Or, you could always just try and put yourself in the other person's shoes; if you were in their place, how would you react if someone made a funny but sorta inappropriate comment at an uncomfortable time. It'll take a while to get over it but if you try and think about what you're gonna say before you say it that might help.
